The importance of being connected to high-quality internet service cannot be overstated, and our community has significant connectivity resources already available:
Los Angeles residents have many high-quality providers available – in fact, 96% of Los Angeles residents are serviced by multiple wired providers, and at least three Los Angeles providers offer gigabit speeds, according to BroadbandNow.
Eligible low-income families can now access this high-quality internet for free with the federal broadband benefit available through the Affordable Connectivity Program.
Yet too many Los Angeles families remain unconnected – in areas of our community that have historically been under-resourced.
Our Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has a historic opportunity to use federal funding to invest in the right solutions to close the right gaps that will bridge the digital divide for the long term.
Unfortunately, the County is considering a plan to have Los Angeles build and operate its own duplicative internet network, which would take years to develop and deploy and needlessly saddle taxpayers with hundreds of millions of dollars in unnecessary costs – all to implement the wrong “solution,” leaving many of those who need help most still unconnected.
Los Angeles deserves better.
Local internet providers have made significant investments to deploy high-quality internet infrastructure to nearly every corner of Los Angeles.
Our local leaders have the opportunity to use these state-of-the-art networks to get unconnected families online in a matter of weeks, not years, with no risk to taxpayers – a solution that will work (and cost millions less than a duplicative system).
